THE CENTER FOR WORKERS' RIGHTS STRIVES TO IMPROVE WORKING CONDITIONS, REDUCE BARRIERS TO SECURING EMPLOYMENT, AND REMEDY WORKPLACE INJUSTICES FOR LOW WAGE WORKERS IN THE GREATER SACRAMENTO AREA.

COVID RELATED WORKER OUTREACH - WE CONTINUED TO OPERATE OUR CORONAVIRUS JOB PROTECTION HELPLINE THAT WAS FIRST LAUNCHED IN 2020 AND WE PARTICIPATED IN A STATEWIDE OUTREACH EFFORT LED BY CALIFORNIA'S LABOR AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AGENCY TO HELP WORKERS STAY SAFE DURING THE PANDEMIC. WE PROVIDED INFORMATION TO THOUSANDS OF WORKERS IN THE GREATER SACRAMENTO REGION ON PERMANENT PAID SICK DAYS, SUPPLEMENTAL (COVID) PAID SICK DAYS, STATE DISABILITY INSURANCE, PAID FAMILY LEAVE AND WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTECTIONS. WORKERS PARTICIPATED IN TRAININGS AND RECEIVED ASSISTANCE IN HOW TO REMEDY WORKPLACE VIOLATIONS. CWR FACILITATED THE BOOKING OF VACCINE APPOINTMENTS FOR ESSENTIAL WORKERS DURING BOTH THE INITIAL ROLLOUT OF THE COVID VACCINES AND THE DECEMBER BOOSTERS.
WAGE RECOVERY - WE USE NON-LITIGATION STRATEGIES TO COMBAT WAGE THEFT. WE FILE INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE CASES AT THE CA LABOR COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE. WE HAVE CONTINUED TO OPERATE OUR WAGE THEFT CLINIC, WHICH INVESTIGATES AND PREPARES CALCULATIONS OF WAGES AND PENALTIES OWED FOR LOW-WAGE WORKERS. WE MET REGULARLY WITH LEADERSHIP FROM THE LABOR COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE TO IMPROVE THEIR PROCEDURES. THIS YEAR, WE SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED FOR A RE- HEARING OF A LABOR COMMISSIONER CASE AFTER THE WORKER HAD BEEN DENIED WAGES OWED.
UNEMPLOYEMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS ASSISTANCE - CWR SPOKE WITH THOUSANDS OF WORKERS REGARDING DIFFICULTIES IN ACCESSING UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS AND FEDERAL PANDEMIC BENEFITS. WE COORDINATED A WEEKLY MEETING OF ADVOCATES FROM AROUND THE STATE TO DISCUSS COMMON ISSUES AND COORDINATE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE CALIFORNIA EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT. IN COLLABORATION WITH ASIAN LAW CAUCUS, WE HELD A FIVE-PART TRAINING SERIES ON HOW TO HELP CLAIMANTS ACCESS UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS DURING THE PANDEMIC.
WORKERS' RIGHTS CLINICS - CWR CONTINUED TO RUN ITS LEGAL CLINICS WITH VOLUNTEER LAW STUDENTS FROM UC DAVIS AND MCGEORGE SCHOOLS OF LAW AND VOLUNTEER SUPERVISING ATTORNEYS. THE CLINICS PROVIDE ACCURATE, APPLICABLE, AND FREE INFORMATION TO WORKING PEOPLE ON THEIR RIGHTS WHEN ISSUES ARISE IN THE WORKPLACE THROUGH ONE ON ONE CONSULTATIONS. WITH THE DEMAND FOR ASSISTANCE THIS YEAR, WE ADDED A NEW CLINIC WITH VOLUNTEERS FROM STANFORD UNIVERSITY AND DEDICATED ONE CLINIC EACH WEEK TO THOSE WORKERS WHO WERE STRUGGLING TO OBTAIN OR MAINTAIN THEIR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS.
