TO SUPPORT POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND BUILD LEADERSHIP SKILLS THROUGH TEACHING THE CRAFT OF TRADITIONAL WOODEN BOAT BUILDING, SAILING, AND RESPECT FOR THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT.

BROOKLYN BOATWORKS OVERSAW 12 BOATS IN NINE SCHOOLS, WORKING WITH A TOTAL OF 133 NEW YORK CITY SCHOOL STUDENTS SPANNING 5TH THROUGH 10TH GRADES. OVER THE COURSE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR EACH CLASS OF STUDENTS WORKED TOGETHER TO BUILD A 7'6" OPTIMIST PRAM SAILBOAT USING WOOD AND SIMPLE HAND TOOLS. STUDENTS LEARNED BASIC CONSTRUCTION AND TOOL SKILLS, APPLIED MEASUREMENT AND ESTIMATION, LOCAL WATERWAY GEOGRAPHY, NAUTICAL CHART READING, BUOYANCY, AND THE PHYSICS OF SAILING. BROOKLYN BOATWORKS EMPHASIZES COOPERATION, PERSEVERANCE, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND THE BENEFITS OF LEARNING BY DOING. BROOKLYN BOATWORKS ALSO WORKED WITH PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS AND A GROUP OF TWENTY MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS TO BUILD THE FIRST-EVER BROOKLYN OYSTER DORY, A 14' TECHNICALLY COMPLEX WOODEN BOAT. AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, STUDENTS CELEBRATED THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN A JOYOUS GRADUATION CEREMONY. MARITIME-CENTERED EDUCATION, HANDS-ON LEARNING, STEM SKILLS, AND HEALTHY SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT REMAINED FRONT AND CENTER AS STUDENTS CONDUCTED GROUP EXPERIMENTS FROM HOME, JOINED TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES, AND PARTICIPATED IN A VARIETY OF REMOTE FIELD TRIPS. OUR STAFF CONDUCTED RESOURCE CALLS TO ALL STUDENTS AND ALUMNI, WITH A VARIETY OF EMERGENCY RESOURCES AND BKBW UPDATES. BKBW ALSO BEGAN PRODUCING A PODCAST FEATURING BROOKLYN BOATWORKS STUDENTS AND THEIR STORIES OF CHALLENGE AND RESILIENCE. WE ALSO CREATED AND PUBLISHED OVER 20 FREE AND ACCESSIBLE STEM VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND HELD VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS ON INSTAGRAM LIVE.
