THE ORGANIZATION WAS FORMED TO STRENGTHEN THE COORDINATED COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO SITUATIONS OF CHILD MALTREATMENT, INCLUDING CHILD ABUSE, SEVERE PHYSICAL ABUSE, SEVERE NEGLECT, AND FATALITIES BY INTEGRATING THE EXISTING RESOURCES OF LAW ENFOREMENT, CHILD PROTECTION, PROSECUTION, MEDICAL AND THERAPEUTIC AGENCIES SO THAT PERPETRATORS ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS AND CHILDREN ARE NOT FURTHER TRAUMATIZED BY THE INVESTIGATIVE PROCESS.

IN FISCAL YEAR 2021, 294 FORENSIC INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED ON-SITE BY A CHILDFIRST VIRGINIA INTERVIEW MODEL-TRAINED PROFESSIONAL. SIXTY (60) FORENSIC MEDICAL EXAMS WERE CONDUCTED BY SEXUAL ASSAULT NURSE EXAMINER (SANE) QUALIFIED NURSES. SAFE HARBOR FACILITATED THE MONTHLY MULTI- DISCIPLINARY TEAM (MDT) MEETINGS FOR EACH OF THE FIVE (5) JURISDICTIONS IT SERVED IN FY2021. A TOTAL OF (59) MDT MEETINGS WERE FACILITATED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR; DURING THOSE MEETINGS MORE THAN TWO HUNDRED EIGHTY FOUR (284) CASES WERE REVIEWED BY MDT. SAFE HARBOR PARTNERED WITH RAPPAHANNOCK AREA COMMUNITY SERVICES BOARD (RACSB) TO PROVIDE TRAUMA- FOCUSED COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL AND MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY WHICH RESULTED IN SIGNIFICANT DECREASES IN THE POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) SCORES OF THE CHILDREN TESTED. SAFE HARBOR PROVIDED VICTIM ADVOCACY SERVICES TO (293) FAMILIES. THESE SERVICES INCLUDED FAMILY ASSESSMENTS, FOLLOW-UP AND REFERRAL, RESOURCE PROVISION, AND CRISIS COUNSELING. SAFE HARBOR PROVIDED TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR MEMBERS OF THE FIVE MDT'S. MULTIPLE PEER REVIEWS WERE PROVIDED RESULTING IN MORE THAN THIRTY CHILDFIRST-TRAINED FORENSIC INTERVIEWERS RECIEVING FEEDBACK FROM OTHER TRAINED PROFESSIONALS. COURTESY FORENSIC INTERVIEWS WERE EXTENDED TO BEYOND SAFE HARBOR'S FIVE JURISDICTIONS INCLUDING: VIRGINIA STATE POLICE; FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATIONS; CHESAPEAKE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES (DSS); WESTMORELAND DSS; COLONIAL BEACH DSS; ORANGE COUNTY DSS; AND CULPEPER COUNTY.
