Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: CONTINUING TO INSPIRE STUDENTS, TEACHERS, SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS, WITH A LOVE OF NATURE, AN UNDERSTANDING OF ENVIRONMENTAL AGGRESSORS AND THE KNOW-HOW OF ACCESSIBLE CLIMATE SOLUTIONS THROUGH OUR EVIDENCE-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOCUSED PROGRAMS THAT INCLUDE OUR EXPERIENTIAL ECO TOURS, SCHOOL GREENING, OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS, GENERATION EARTH, TEACHER TRAINING AND YOUTH LEADERSHIP ECO CLUBS; (NEW ADDITION: LEARN AT HOME). THE ECO-TOUR PROGRAM IS A UNIQUE FIELD TRIP WHERE STUDENTS EXPLORE TREEPEOPLE'S COLDWATER CANYON PARK GUIDED BY ECO-EDUCATORS THAT CONNECT THE CYCLES OF NATURE BACK TO A STUDENT'S OWN BACKYARD. DUE TO COVID, PROGRAMMING WAS DONE THROUGH A MIX OF VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON EFFORTS. IN TOTAL, TREEPEOPLE PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES TO OVER 25,000 STUDENTS. THROUGH THE GENERATION EARTH PROGRAM TREEPEOPLE WORKED WITH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH TO CONDUCT ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS THAT FOCUSED ON WATER, WASTE, AND CAMPUS FORESTRY. THIS PROGRAM WAS ABLE TO SERVE APPROXIMATELY 10,567 STUDENTS ACROSS 216 SCHOOLS.

POLICY & RESEARCH: OUR HEALTHY SOILS FOR HEALTHY COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE WORKED WITH SOIL EXPERTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO DETERMINE THE CURRENT STATUS OF LOS ANGELES'S URBAN SOIL HEALTH BASED ON THE COMPLETED URBAN SOIL SURVEY IN THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES. FROM OUR RESEARCH, WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER SOME MATERIALS TO SHARE WITH THE PUBLIC SUCH AS A FINAL REPORT, WEBSITE, AND TOOLKITS. ADDITIONALLY, OUR TEAM CONDUCTED THE PLANTING RESILIENCE: ASSESSING VULNERABILITIES AND BENEFITS OF LA'S URBAN FOREST RESEARCH PROJECT. THE PROJECT HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTING FIVE DISTINCT BUT RELATED PROJECTS AIMED AT ADVANCING THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE OF L.A.'S URBAN FOREST AS IT CURRENTLY EXISTS, IN SUPPORT OF EMPLOYING APPROACHES TO OPTIMIZE THE URBAN FOREST'S ABILITY TO SERVE AS AN ALLY IN THE EXISTENTIAL RACE TO BEAT CLIMATE CHANGE. FOR EXAMPLE, IN ONE PROJECT, A THERMAL SENSOR NETWORK WAS INSTALLED FOR THE EMPIRICAL DATA COLLECTION COMPONENT OF THE STUDY. THE LATEST PUBLICATION TO COME OUT OF THIS PROJECT IS THE LOS ANGELES URBAN FOREST EQUITY ASSESSMENT REPORT, WHICH FOUND THAT FUNDING IS A CRITICAL COMPONENT IN ADDRESSING THE HISTORICALLY DERIVED, INEQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION OF THE CITY'S URBAN FOREST.

URBAN AND MOUNTAIN FORESTRY: TREEPEOPLE'S URBAN AND MOUNTAIN FORESTRY PROGRAM PERFORMS COMMUNITY-BASED URBAN GREENING ACTIVITIES TO BUILD GRASSROOTS SUPPORT THAT SHIFTS LOS ANGELES' RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE BY PROVIDING A MODEL FOR HEALTHY, CLIMATE RESILIENT CITIES. WE EXPAND LOS ANGELES COUNTY'S TREE CANOPY THROUGH EDUCATION, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND HANDS-ON WORK TO RAISE AWARENESS OF GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AS A MULTIBENEFIT SOLUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND CLIMATE CHANGE. OUR WORK IS FOCUSED ON THE GREATER LOS ANGELES REGION, INCLUDING URBAN AREAS, PARK SPACE AND MOUNTAIN FORESTS. TREEPEOPLE ENGAGES VOLUNTEERS TO PLANT AND CARE FOR TREES, ADDRESSING LA'S NEED FOR URBAN HEAT MITIGATION, CLEANER AIR AND WATER, GREENHOUSE GAS CAPTURE, FRESH FRUIT ACCESS AND AN OVERALL HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENT. OUR MOUNTAIN PROGRAM RESTORES FIRE-SCARRED AREAS TO ADVANCE RESILIENCE, BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM HEALTH. IN 2021, TREEPEOPLE ENGAGED MORE THAN 4,400 VOLUNTEERS, PLANTED MORE THAN 10,000 TREES AND PLANTS IN MOUNTAIN FORESTS, PLANTED 2,000 TREES IN URBAN PARKWAYS, AND DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 500 FRUIT TREES TO RESIDENTS. IN ADDITION, TREEPEOPLE ENGAGED AND SUPPORTED VOLUNTEERS TO ENSURE THE SURVIVAL OF THOUSANDS OF PLANTS AND TREES ACROSS THE REGION.
