COUNCIL 71 REPRESENTS OVER 5,600 WORKERS IN 70+ BARGAINING UNITS IN SOUTH JERSEY, THROUGH CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS, GRIEVANCE AND ARBITRATION REPRESENTATION AND GENERAL ADVICE. COUNCIL 71 ALSO ASSISTS PUBLIC EMPLOYEES SEEKING TO UNIONIZE.

THE UNION COUNCIL, THROUGH EMPLOYEES AND LEGAL SPECIALISTS, NEGOTIATES CONTRACTS FOR BARGAINING UNITS THAT COVER THEIR MEMBERS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THESE NEGOTIATIONS IS TO PROVIDE THE MEMBERS WITH JOB PROTECTION, IMPROVED WORKING CONDIDITIONS, MAINTAIN OR INCREASE BENEFITS AND MAINTAIN OR INCREASE WORKERS WAGES.


THE UNION COUNCIL, THROUGH EMPLOYEES AND LEGAL SPECIALISTS, RESOLVES GRIEVANCES AND DISCIPLINARY ISSUES FOR THE MEMBERSHIP. THE OBJECTIVES OF PURSUING THESE GRIEVANCES INCLUDES INDIVIDUAL WORKER'S JOB PROTECTION, ENFORSEMENT OF CONTRACTS,IMPROVEMENT OF WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENSURING THAT WORKERS RECEIVE A FAIR HEARING.


THE UNION COUNCIL SPONSORS MEMBER EDUCATION PROGRAMS. THE PURPOSE OF THESE PROGRAMS IS TO TRAIN UNIT OFFICERS IN THEIR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES TO THEIR LOCAL, TRAIN UNION MEMBERS IN THEIR POSITIONS AS SHOP STEWARDS, OFFER LEADERSHIP TRAINING TO THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP, AND EDUCATE THE MEMBERSHIP IN AREAS OF CONTRACT ENFORSEMENT, NEGOTIATIONS, ORGANIZING, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH.
