THE MISSION OF SOUTH LA WETLANDS DISCOVERY CENTER IS TO REVOULTIONIZE THE WAY WE THINK, TEACH, AND LEARN ABOUT LOUISIANAS DISAPPEARING COAST. WE ARE CURRENTLY RAISING FUNDS TO FURTHER OUR MISSION

(NAS): PROJECT RESILIENCE: EMPOWERING GULF COAST YOUTH TO THRIVE IN TRANSFORMATIVE COMMUNITIES. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION AND TOOLS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN COASTAL LOUISIANA THAT WILL ENABLE THESE STUDENTS TO DEVELOP SHORT- AND LONG-TERM RESILIENCE PLANS FOR THEIR COMMUNITIES IN RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS THIS REGION IS EXPERIENCING, INCLUDING FLOODING AND COASTAL EROSION. THIS PROJECT WAS IMPLEMENTED BY THE UNIVERSITY CORPORATION FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH (UCAR) CENTER FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION AND THE SOUTH LOUISIANA WETLANDS DISCOVERY CENTER, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE GULF RESEARCH PROGRAM OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES OF SCIENCES, ENGINEERING, AND MEDICINE. CURRICULUM DEVELOPED BY THE WETLANDS DISCOVERY CENTER AND UCAR IS BEING IMPLEMENTED IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CLASSES AT FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS IN TERREBONNE PARISH.EXPENSES INCLUDE 8% OF STAFF TIME TO PRODUCE THE PROGRAM


COASTAL CLASSROOM: INTEGRATES WETLANDS EDUCATION WITH THE CURRENT LOUISIANA SCIENCE STANDARDS TO DEVELOP HANDS-ON LESSONS FOCUSING ON LOUISIANAS COASTAL LAND LOSS CRISIS. THESE INTERACTIVE LESSONS ARE DESIGNED TO BRING THE WETLANDS INTO THE STANDARD CLASSROOM. STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DELVE INTO PROBLEMS LIKE SUBSIDENCE AND SALTWATER INTRUSION AND EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF THESE PROBLEMS ON THE SURROUNDING COASTAL ECOSYSTEM. IN ADDITION TO THE PROBLEMS OF LAND LOSS, STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO EXAMINE THE VARIOUS PROTECTION AND RESTORATION PROJECTS ALONG THE COAST AND LEARN HOW THESE EFFORTS ARE HELPING TO PRESERVE LOUISIANAS WETLANDS.


SUMMER CAMPS- OUR ANNUAL SUMMER CAMPS ARE OPEN TO STUDENTS AGES 9-12. OUR CAMPERS TAKE FIELD TRIPS TO EXCITING WETLAND VENUES AND RETURN TO THE BAYOU TERREBONNE WATERLIFE MUSEUM TO DISCUSS THEIR EXPERIENCES AND PARTICIPATE IN OTHER HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES. THE WETLANDS EXPLORER CAMP FOCUSES ON WHAT MAKES OUR COAST SPECIAL AND THE WORKING COAST CAMP EXPLORES OUR NATURAL RESOURCES. EXPENSES INCLUDE 57% OF STAFF TIME TO PRODUCE THE PROGRAM.
