MILL NECK MANOR SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF OPERATES A SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM SERVING NEARLY 120 CHILDREN FROM THE NEW YORK CITY AND LONG ISLAND AREA WHO ARE DEAF OR WHOSE HEARING OR SPEECH IS OTHERWISE IMPAIRED.

DEAF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM - OPERATING UNDER SECTION 4201 OF THE NY STATE EDUCATION LAW, MILL NECK MANOR SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF SERVES OVER 100 PROFOUNDLY DEAF CHILDREN. CHILDREN BEGIN RECEIVING SERVICES AS SOON AS DEAFNESS IS DIAGNOSED, OFTEN BEFORE AGE ONE. BY THREE YEARS OLD, CHILDREN ATTEND THE PROGRAM FULL-TIME. BENEFITTING BY A TOTAL COMMUNICATION PHILOSOPHY, CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE USING SPEECH, SIGN LANGUAGE, AND OTHER COMMUNICATION FORMS. THE SCHOOL OFFERS A FULL RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES, INCLUDING AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, SPORTS TEAMS, ETC. THE SCHOOL IS LICENSED TO AWARD A NYS HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.


IDEA 611 AND 619 GRANTS - DISTRICT(S) OF RESIDENCE FORWARD FEDERAL GRANT FUNDS TO MILL NECK MANOR WHICH ENABLES ITS PROGRAM TO MEET THE UNIQUE, SPECIALIZED NEEDS OF THE DEAF AND COMMUNICATION-IMPAIRED STUDENTS BY PROVIDING A SPECIALLY TRAINED READING TEACHER TO ENHANCE LITERACY.

UPKEEP AND MAINTENANCE OF THESE BUILDINGS IS REQUIRED AND HAVE THEIR OWN COSTS, OUTSIDE OF THE REGULAR SCHOOL PROGRAMS. SEVERAL OF THESE BUILDINGS ARE OCCUPIED BY AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS OR ARE RENTED OUT TO OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS.
