SEWA-AIFW SERVES THE VULNERABLE AND UNDERSERVED POPULATION OF IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES IN A CULTURALLY SPECIFIC WAY. THERE ARE OVER 92,000 SOUTH ASIANS LIVING IN MINNESOTA. 52,000+ ASIAN INDIANS ALONE. THIS IS THE ONLY SOCIAL SERVICES AGENCY SERVING THIS POPULATION.

Part 3 - Line 4a

COMMUNITY HEALTH INITIATIVES INCLUDE FREE MONTHLY HEALTH CLINIC, HEALTH PROGRAMS/CONFERENCES, AND ADVOCAY SCREENINGS AND REFERRALS. THESE PROGRAMS ARE PROVIDED BY VOLUNTEER PHYSICIANS, DENTISTS, AND NURSE PRACTITIONERS. SEWA PROVIDED DIRECT SERVICES TO OVER 1,500 PEOPLE AND EDUCATION SERVICES TO 2000 PEOPLE ABOUT HEART DISEASES, DIABETES, AND NUTRITION. ALSO, COLLABORATING WITH OTHER AGENCIES ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN EXPLOITED ASIAN WOMEN AND CHILDREN PROVIDING ASSESSMENTS ON REASONS OF HIGH INCIDENCE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN MINNESOTA. IN 2021 FEW MAJOR INCIDENCES HAPPENED THAT TURNED THE LIFE CHANGES, GEORGE FLOYED EVENTS THAT BROUGH ADDED TRAUMA, ANXIRTY RACIAL TENSIONS, DEPRESSION IN SENIORS/FOOD INSECURITY AND XENOPHOBIA. SEWA PIVOTRED OUR PROGRAMS AND RESPONDED TO THE NEED OF THE COMMUNITY, GETTING A CALL FROM NEARBY SHELTER AND HELPING WOMEN AND CHILDREN TO TAKE THEM TO SAFETY. PLUS, SEWA RESPONDED TO DEMANDS PUT ON US WITH NEEDS FROM ASIAN HATE/COVID-19.


COMMUNITY HEALTH OUTREACH AND SENIOR ENGAGEMENT WITH VARIOUS OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES INCLUDING HOLIDAY LUNCH, VISITING TO TEMPLES, NUTRITION EDUCATION AND SUMMER PICNICS. SERVED OVER 60 SENIORS IN THE COMMUNITY. 22 VIRTUAL MEETINGS WERE HELD WITH 15 ATTENDEES IN EACH MEETING. 32 VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE SPENT ON THESE ACTIVITIES. MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH COMMENDED SEWA-AIFW FOR THEIR SERVICES DURING THE COVID-19 PENDEMIC, HTTPS://WWW.HEALTH.STATE.MN.US/DISEASES/CORONAVIRUS/STORIES/SEWA.HTML. AS TRUSTED MEMBERS OF MDH AND HENNEPIN COUNTY SEWA-AIFW HAS BEEN GRANTED FUNDS TO CARRY AND NAVIGATE CULTURAL COMMUNITY TO TESTING CENTERS/ VACCINES/ LATEST WORD FROM CDC.


CRIME VICTIMS GRANT: DIRECTLY SERVED 341 WOMEN WHO WERE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BY DIRECT SERVICES AS WELL AS PROVIDING RESOURCES, CONSULTING AND EDUCATION FOR SAFETY - COORDINATED CULTURAL EVENTS TO REMOVE ISOLATION AND HELPED SENIORS WITH WINTER CLOTHING, CAREER COUNSELING, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. SERVED OVER 60 BHUTANESE YOUTH AND ADULTS IN LEADERSHIP TRAINING SO THEY ARE KEPT OFF THE STREETS BY PROVIDING RESOURCES FOR SPORTS ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SOCCER FOR BOYS AND GIRLS 6-18 YRS OLD.
