MAINEHEALTH IS A VOLUNTARY, NOT-FOR-PROFIT COMMUNITY AND REFERRAL SYSTEM OF HOSPITALS, DEDICATED TO PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY HEALTH CARE SERVICES TO ALL PERSONS WHO SEEK CARE REGARDLESS OF THEIR SEX, RACE, RELIGION, AGE, COLOR, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, NATIONAL ORIGIN, PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL DISABILITY OR SOCIAL OR ECONOMIC STATUS. MAINEHEALTH IS ALSO COMMITTED TO EDUCATION AT THE UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE, POST-GRADUATE AND CONTINUING EDUCATION LEVELS FOR PHYSICIANS, NURSES AND ALLIED HEALTH PERSONNEL, AND IN-SERVICE TRAINING FOR SUPPORT STAFF ALL OF WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE DELIVERY OF QUALITY PATIENT CARE. PATIENT CAREMAINEHEALTH SERVICES (MAINEHEALTH'S PARENT) OPERATES A NOT-FOR-PROFIT HEALTH SYSTEM DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF PATIENTS AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HIGH-QUALITY AFFORDABLE CARE, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH. MAINEHEALTH OPERATES NINE LICENSED HOSPITAL FACILITIES IN MAINE, INCLUDING A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL, CRITICAL ACCESS HOSPITALS, PRIMARY AND SPECIALTY PRACTICE LOCATIONS AND A STAND-ALONE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH HOSPITAL. THESE HEALTH SYSTEM RESOURCES OFFER EXPERTISE IN MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES INCLUDING EMERGENCY MEDICINE, SURGERY, RADIOLOGY, ONCOLOGY, BEHAVIORAL HEALTH, AND LEVEL ONE TRAUMA. IN JUST 15 DAYS, THE SITE BECAME A CRITICAL VACCINATION RESOURCE, ADMINISTERING UP TO 3,000 SHOTS PER DAY, DISTRIBUTING A TOTAL OF 122,000 SHOTS, AND FULLY VACCINATING MORE THAN 53,500 INDIVIDUALS IN LESS THAN FOUR MONTHS. THE MAINEHEALTH SCARBOROUGH DOWNS CLINIC WAS STAFFED BY HUNDREDS OF CARE TEAM MEMBERS FROM ALL DEPARTMENTS ACROSS THE SYSTEM WHO WERE REDEPLOYED TO WORK THE CLINIC AT LEAST PART-TIME. NURSES AND PHYSICIANS RETURNED FROM RETIREMENT TO LEND A HAND, AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS FROM SOME OF MAINE'S LARGEST EMPLOYERS ALSO ANSWERED THE CALL.2)INNOVATIVE COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY ACROSS THE SYSTEM, PATIENT CARE REPRESENTATIVES AND INFORMATION SERVICES DEPARTMENTS BANDED TOGETHER TO ESTABLISH A CALL CENTER AND ONLINE REGISTRATION PROCESS TO MAINTAIN SMOOTH ONSITE CLINIC OPERATIONS. A 70-PERSON CALL CENTER WAS ESTABLISHED WITHIN THREE DAYS, IN COLLABORATION WITH CLOUD TECHNOLOGY. ADDITIONALLY, MAINEHEALTH INVESTED IN CREATING ONLINE SCHEDULING FUNCTIONALITY TO ENSURE PATIENTS COULD ACCESS VACCINATION APPOINTMENTS WITH EASE. MAINEHEALTH MEDICAL GROUP FORMATION2021 SAW A MAJOR EVOLUTION OF THE MAINEHEALTH SYSTEM WITH THE FOUNDING OF THE MAINEHEALTH MEDICAL GROUP (A SUBSIDIARY OF MAINEHEALTH), THE LARGEST MEDICAL GROUP IN NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND. IT UNIFIES ALL 1,800 MAINEHEALTH-EMPLOYED PROVIDERS AT THE SYSTEM'S 300 SPECIALTY AND PRIMARY CARE PRACTICES IN MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE.THE GROUP'S PURPOSE IS TO FULFILL A PATIENT-CENTERED CLINICAL MISSION, WHICH STRIVES FOR CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT, CLEAR COMMUNICATION AND THE ADVANCEMENT OF MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE: "WORKING TOGETHER SO OUR COMMUNITIES ARE THE HEALTHIEST IN AMERICA."ADDED PATIENT CARE FACILITIESIN JUNE, A NEW 108,000-SQUARE-FOOT MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING WAS COMPLETED, BRINGING TOGETHER NEUROLOGY, NEUROSURGERY, REHABILITATIVE MEDICINE, OTOLARYNGOLOGY AND VASCULAR SURGERY PRACTICES IN ONE REGIONAL CENTER FOR SPECIALTY CARE IN SOUTHERN MAINE. PATIENTS NOW HAVE EASY ACCESS TO THE MOST ADVANCED TREATMENTS, DIAGNOSTICS AND IMAGING SERVICES-INCLUDING A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) SCANNER-IN ONE LOCATION. THE NEUROSCIENCE PRACTICE OFFERS SEAMLESS CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH NEUROLOGIC DISORDERS AND PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR BETTER COLLABORATION BETWEEN PROVIDERS. THE NEW OTOLARYNGOLOGY PRACTICE FEATURES ENHANCED SERVICES, INCLUDING ALLERGY THERAPY AND AUDIOLOGY.ADDITIONALLY, TWO PATIENT CARE FLOORS WITH 64 NEW ONCOLOGY PATIENT ROOMS AND A NEW HELIPORT WERE ADDED TO MAINE MEDICAL CENTER. WITH THIS, THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE CONTINUES TO INCREASE IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:- INCREASED VISITOR PARKING WITH THREE NEW PARKING GARAGE LEVELS FOR AN ADDITIONAL 225 PARKING SPACES.- THE CREATION OF 128 NEW PRIVATE PATIENT ROOMS AND 19 PROCEDURE ROOMS FOR SURGERIES AND OTHER COMPLEX TREATMENTS. - INCREASED TRANSPORTATION EFFICIENCIES, SAVING INDISPENSABLE TIME WHEN TRANSPORTING CRITICALLY ILL OR INJURED PATIENTS TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.


TEACHING (MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM)MAINEHEALTH'S FLAGSHIP HOSPITAL, MAINE MEDICAL CENTER ("MMC"), HAS A LONG HISTORY OF EDUCATING MEDICAL STUDENTS, RESIDENTS, AND FACULTY. THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL EDUCATION, WITH A STAFF OF 80, MANAGES 11 RESIDENCIES AND 10 FELLOWSHIPS, ALL APPROVED BY THE ACCREDITATION COUNCIL FOR GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION. CURRENTLY THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 300 RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS. HISTORICALLY, ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF MMC'S RESIDENCY GRADUATES HAVE STAYED IN MAINE TO PRACTICE. OUR GRADUATES ALSO GO ON TO OUTSTANDING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 OF 990, LINE 4B) ESTABLISHED IN 2008, THE TUFTS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE - MAINE MEDICAL CENTER PROGRAM, KNOWN AS THE "MAINE TRACK," OFFERS A UNIQUE AND INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM, EXPOSING STUDENTS TO RURAL PRACTICES AND TRAINING IN A MAJOR TERTIARY MEDICAL CENTER. THERE ARE 40 MATRICULANTS IN EACH TUSM CLASS DEDICATED TO MAINE TRACK. MUCH OF THE CURRICULUM IS BASED IN MAINE, PARTICULARLY IN THE 2ND THROUGH 4TH YEARS OF MEDICAL SCHOOL. MMC DEVELOPED A UNIQUE 9-MONTH LONGITUDINAL INTEGRATED CLERKSHIP OFFERED AT MMC AND IN 10 COMMUNITY HOSPITAL SITES. ADDITIONALLY CLERKSHIP STUDENTS FROM THE UNE COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE ROTATE THROUGH MMC ANNUALLY. THE HANNAFORD CENTER FOR SAFETY, INNOVATION AND SIMULATION IS A STATE-OF-THE-ART 15,000 SQUARE-FOOT TRAINING CENTER THAT UTILIZES THE LATEST IN HUMAN MEDICAL SIMULATOR TECHNOLOGY TO TAKE MEDICAL EDUCATION TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL POSSIBLE. THE CENTER PROVIDES LEARNERS AND FACULTY WITH EXTREMELY REALISTIC SCENARIOS, ALLOWING THEM TO GAIN SIGNIFICANT SKILLS WHILE GREATLY REDUCING PATIENT RISK. MMC IS THE FLAGSHIP PROVIDER FOR CONTINUING INTERPROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CIPD) IN MAINE, AND IS NOW JOINTLY ACCREDITED THROUGH THE MAJOR NATIONAL ACCREDITING BODIES INCLUDING MEDICINE, NURSING, PHARMACY, AND OTHERS. THE GOAL OF THE CIPD PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE CONTINUING EDUCATION OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY FOR ALL PROFESSIONS WITHIN THE STATE. LAUNCHED IN 2015, THE MMC INSTITUTE FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE (MITE) PROVIDES FACULTY DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES (E.G., SCHOLARS PROGRAM) FOR EDUCATORS. IN ADDITION TO OFFERING CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS, SUPPORT FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION RESEARCH AND A WIDE VARIETY OF HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, THE INSTITUTE HOSTS A VARIED MENU OF HIGH-QUALITY FACULTY DEVELOPMENT. BY PROMOTING ACADEMIC MEDICINE EXCELLENCE AT ALL LEVELS OF INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION, THE INSTITUTE AND THE RECENTLY FORMED MITE ACADEMY SEEKS TO SUPPORT, NURTURE AND PROMOTE ALL CLINICIAN EDUCATORS IN THE STATE OF MAINE. SIGNIFICANT FY21 ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE: - SECOND YEAR OF TEACHING THE 2ND CURRICULUM OF THE MAINE TRACK YEARS IN MAINE.- THE SECOND GRADUATE OF THE RURAL INTERNAL MEDICINE MAINE (RIMM) RESIDENCY TRACK AT STEPHENS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. A CURRENT RIMM RESIDENT HAS SIGNED ON TO JOIN THE PRACTICE IN 2023.- THIRD YEAR OF THE INTERPROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIP TO ADVANCE PATIENT CARE AND EDUCATION (IPACE) GRANT FROM THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION. EFFORTS HAVE SPREAD TO MULTIPLE MMC INPATIENT UNITS, AN OUTPATIENT PRACTICE, AND A RURAL SITE.- JOINT ACCREDITATION WAS ACHIEVED IN FY21 TO PROMOTE INTERPROFESSIONAL AND TEAM-BASED EDUCATION, AND NOW INCLUDES ONE OF THE RURAL TEACHING HOSPITALS.- HRSA GRANT TO EXPLORE A RURAL PSYCHIATRY TRACK AT PENBAY MEDICAL CENTER.


RESEARCHMAINE MEDICAL CENTER RESEARCH INSTITUTE IS THE RESEARCH ARM OF MAINEHEALTH WHICH SUPPORTS AND ENCOURAGES A BROAD SPECTRUM OF RESEARCH RANGING FROM BASIC LABORATORY-BASED RESEARCH TO TRANSLATIONAL AND CLINICAL RESEARCH, TO POPULATION AND HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH. THE INSTITUTE IS DIVIDED INTO THE FOLLOWING DIVISIONS: THE CENTER FOR MOLECULAR MEDICINE, THE CENTER FOR CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH, THE CENTER FOR PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH, AND THE CENTER FOR OUTCOMES RESEARCH (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 OF 990, LINE 4C) AND EVALUATION. IN 2021, MMCRI HAD ROUGHLY $22M IN ANNUAL GRANT INCOME AND RECEIVED 43 NEW GRANTS, ALLOWING THE INSTITUTE'S CLINICAL AND BIOMEDICAL RESEARCHERS TO CONTRIBUTE TO WORLDWIDE BODY OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. IN ADDITION, OVER 275 CLINICAL TRIAL STUDIES TOOK PLACE WITH THE TOP AREAS OF FOCUS IN ONCOLOGY, NEUROLOGY, AND CARDIOLOGY. NOTABLY IN 2021, WHILE MAINEHEALTH CARE TEAMS CONTINUED THEIR TIRELESS AND COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR COVID-19 PATIENTS, INVESTIGATORS AND PHYSICIAN SCIENTISTS CONTINUED TO ADDRESS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THROUGH A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT RESEARCH EFFORTS. THIS WORK HAS INCLUDED PARTICIPATING IN CLINICAL TRIALS FOCUSED ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE CARE OF HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS, INVESTIGATING HOW TO HELP OVERCOME COVID-19 VACCINE HESITANCY IN RURAL MAINE, AND HOW BEST TO PROVIDE COVID-19 SURVEILLANCE TESTING IN HIGH RISK POPULATIONS. RESEARCH INSTITUTE TEAMS ARE ALSO STUDYING THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF COVID-19. ADDITIONALLY IN 2021, MMCRI WAS AWARDED A FIVE-YEAR, $12.8 MILLION CENTERS OF BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH EXCELLENCE (COBRE) GRANT BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GENERAL MEDICAL SCIENCES OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH. THE FUNDING IS BEING USED TO HELP SUPPORT CLINICAL RESEARCH AIMED AT REDUCING RURAL HEALTH DISPARITIES IN ACUTE CARE SETTINGS IN MAINE. OTHER 2021 HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED: 319 SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES PUBLISHED AND OVER 2,798 BIOSPECIMENS WERE DISTRIBUTED BY OUR BIOBANK TISSUE REPOSITORY.
