TRAUMA TRUST CONTINUES TO PROVIDE ADULT TRAUMA CARE TO THE TACOMA/SOUTH SOUND AREA WHICH SERVES AS A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR THE WEST REGIONS AND OTHER SURROUNDING TRAUMA CENTERS CARING FOR PATIENTS WITH COMPLEX ORTHOPEDIC, CHEST, ABDOMINAL, FACIAL, HEAD AND SPINE INJURIES. TRAUMA TRUST HAS SERVED 43,963 TRAUMA PATIENTS SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2000 WHICH INCLUDES 4,290 TRAUMA PATIENTS BEING SEEN IN 2021. (AN INCREASE FROM 2020, 3,367 WERE SEEN.)THE TRAUMA TRUST IS COMPRISED OF TRAUMA SURGEONS THAT ARE SUPPORTED BY PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS AND NURSE PRACTITIONERS. DUE TO A NECESSITY FOR 24/7 COVERAGE FOR EMERGENCY SURGERY IN 2009 THE GROUP EXPANDED ITS SERVICE TO INCLUDE ACUTE CARE SURGICAL SERVICES (ACSS). THIS EXPANSION HAS IMPROVED THROUGHPUT, STANDARDIZED CARE AND ALLOWS FOR A TEAM APPROACH. THE ACSS HAS SEEN A RAPID INCREASE IN PATIENT VOLUME WHICH HAS DOUBLED THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS SEEN BY TRAUMA TRUST PROVIDERS.TRAUMA TRUST PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR RESIDENT AND PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT STUDENTS INCLUDING MADIGAN ARMY MEDICAL CENTER (MAMC) AND NAVY PERSONNEL. WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY 15-20 ROTATIONS PER YEAR THROUGH OUR SERVICE THAT ALLOWS FOR MONITORED HANDS-ON CARE OF TRAUMA AND SURGICAL PATIENTS.TRAUMA TRUST SUPPORTS THE WESTERN WASHINGTON TRAUMA COMMUNITY BY SERVING AS A RESOURCE AND PROVIDING EDUCATION TO SURROUNDING TRAUMA CENTERS AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS). TRAUMA TRUST ATTENDS AND HOSTS EVENTS AND PROVIDES EDUCATION AND FEEDBACK ON THE STANDARDS OF THE CRITICALLY INJURED PATIENT. TRAUMA TRUST ALSO HAS REPRESENTATION ON THE WASHINGTON STATE TRAUMA AND EMERGENCY SERVICES COMMITTEE, THE PIERCE COUNTY FALLS COALITION, AND THE NORTHWEST HEALTHCARE RESPONSE NETWORK.EDUCATIONONE OF OUR LARGER EDUCATION PROJECTS IS IN NOVEMBER EACH YEAR. TRAUMA TRUST TYPICALLY HOSTS THE TACOMA TRAUMA CONFERENCE AT THE GREATER TACOMA CONVENTION & TRADE CENTER, THOUGH IN 2021 IT WAS HELD AS A VIRTUAL EVENT DUE TO THE CONTINUED GLOBAL COVID-19 PANDEMIC. EACH YEAR WE PARTNER WITH DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS TO ENRICH OUR CONFERENCE OFFERINGS. IN 2021 WE PARTNERED WITH MULTIPLE ORGANIZATIONS TO INCLUDE MAMC'S ANDERSON SIMULATION CENTER WHO UTILIZED PERSONNEL TO PUT ON A 7-SERIES RAPID ULTRASOUND FOR SHOCK (RUSH) AT CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS WERE ABLE TO FOLLOW VIRTUALLY. THIS TRAINING WAS ALSO PLACED ON OUR TRAUMA TRUST WEB PAGE FOR OUR PHYSICIANS AND ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDERS TO CONTINUE WITH FURTHER TRAINING. WE ALSO PARTNERED WITH UW MEDICINE AND AIRLIFT NORTHWEST FOR CONFERENCE SESSIONS. THE CONFERENCE HAD TWENTY NATIONAL AND LOCAL SPEAKERS. THE CONFERENCE COVERS TOPICS IN BOTH ADULT AND PEDIATRIC TRAUMA, PREHOSPITAL MEDICINE, AND DISASTER PREPAREDNESS. THE CONFERENCE IS TAILORED TO NURSES AND PARAMEDICS AS WELL AS MID-LEVEL PROVIDERS AND PHYSICIANS. IN 2021, TRAUMA TRUST PROVIDED 10 SCHOLARSHIPS TO NURSING AND PARAMEDICINE STUDENTS WISHING TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE. THE CONFERENCE WAS ATTENDED BY 380 PAID PARTICIPANTS. THE STRENGTH OF THE TRAUMA TEAM COULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE EXCELLENT CARE PROVIDED BY THE PREHOSPITAL (EMS) PROVIDERS AND NURSES. TRAUMA TRUST PROVIDES EDUCATION TO EMS, ED, AND ICU TO IMPROVE THE CARE PROVIDED. IN 2021 WE WERE LIMITED IN TRAINING EMS PROVIDERS AND HEALTH STUDENTS ON BLEEDING CONTROL. WE HELD A STOP THE BLEED TRAINING AT PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, TACOMA GENERAL HOSPITAL, AND WEYERHAUSER LUMBER. TRAUMA TRUST PARTNERED WITH PIERCE COUNTY FALL COALITION TO PROVIDE DEVELOPMENT OF A FALL PREVENTION BROCHURE. THE BROCHURES INCLUDE A QUESTIONNAIRE FOR RISK OF FALLING, HOW TO REDUCE RISK OF FALLING, A HOME SAFETY CHECKLIST, AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES. THE BROCHURES ARE NOW LOCATED IN OUR TRAUMA CLINICS AND EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS AT TACOMA GENERAL AND ST. JOSEPHS HOSPITAL. TRAUMA TRUST ALSO PARTICIPATES IN THE WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH INJURY & VIOLENCE PREVENTION TECHNICAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON FALL PREVENTION, PIERCE COUNTY FALLS COALITION, AND TRAUMA CENTER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA INJURY PREVENTION. IN 2021 GRAND ROUNDS WERE PRESENTED VIRTUALLY ON THE TOPICS OF RIB FRACTURES IN THE ELDERLY AND SHOCK FOR TRAUMA PATIENTS. THIS EDUCATION WAS WELL ATTENDED BY OUR HOSPITAL STAFF.TWO ADVANCED TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT COURSES WERE HELD BY TRAUMA TRUST FOR PHYSICIANS AND ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDERS INVOLVED IN THE CARE OF TRAUMA PATIENTS.INJURY PREVENTIONINJURY PREVENTION IS A CORE COMPONENT OF EVERY TRAUMA PROGRAM. TRUST'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION IN 2021 WAS AGAIN LIMITED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. IN 2021, TRAUMA TRUST WAS AGAIN AWARDED FUNDING BY THE WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO PROVIDE RURAL TRAUMA TEAM DEVELOPMENT COURSES. ONE COURSE WAS SCHEDULED AT TRI-STATE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. THE COURSE IS PROVIDED FOR PREHOSPITAL, HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, AND ICU STAFF. THE COURSE WAS WELL ATTENDED BY THE COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORING HOSPITALS AND EMS SERVICES.TRAUMA TRUST UPDATED OUR WEBSITE WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO THE COMMUNITY. WE PROVIDE CURRENT OUTREACH PROGRAMS TO INCLUDE FALL PREVENTION, DISTRACTED DRIVING, AND BLEEDING CONTROL. WE OFFER FREE TRAUMA EDUCATION IN THE FORM OF TRAUMA LEARNING MODULES FOR NURSING STAFF. WE PROVIDE LINKS ON OUR WEBSITE TO OTHER FREE EDUCATIONAL TRAINING TO PROVIDE QUALITY EVIDENCED-BASED TRAUMA EDUCATION.THE RAVEN NEWSLETTER IS PUBLISHED BY TRAUMA TRUST. THE RAVEN SHARES INFORMATION ON INJURY PREVENTION PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES, TRAUMA EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, AND COMMUNITY PREVENTION PROGRAMS. TWO ISSUES WERE PUBLISHED IN 2021 AND SHARED WITH OUR TRAUMA CENTER, RURAL HOSPITALS, PREHOSPITAL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS.WE PROVIDED FALL PREVENTION TRAINING THROUGH OUR ALLIANCE WITH PIERCE COUNTY FALL PREVENTION. WE PARTICIPATED IN VIDEO FALL PREVENTION TRAINING AND HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME TO PREVENT FALLS. OUR TRAUMA MEDICAL DIRECTOR WAS INTERVIEWED ON FALL PREVENTION TECHNIQUES AND INJURIES SUSTAINED IN FALLS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF AGING WISELY, WHICH WAS PRODUCED AND AIRED ON PUBLIC TELEVISION.TRAUMA TRUST IS CONTINUING THEIR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE WA FIREARM TRAGEDY PREVENTION NETWORK TO WORK TOGETHER TO PREVENT FIREARM TRAGEDIES. TRAUMA TRUST HAS INSTRUCTORS FOR IN THEIR SHOES: TEENS AND DATING VIOLENCE, WITH THE WASHINGTON STATE COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. THIS TRAINING INCREASES AWARENESS OF TEEN DATING VIOLENCE THROUGHOUT WASHINGTON. OUR TRAUMA TRUST STAFF ALSO PARTICIPATED IN ADMINISTERING COVID VACCINES FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
