TO BE NORTH CAROLINA'S STATE ORCHESTRA, AN ORCHESTRA ACHIEVING THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ARTISTIC QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS, AND EMBRACING ITS DUAL LEGACIES OF STATEWIDE SERVICE AND MUSIC EDUCATION.

FOUNDED IN 1932, THE NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY (NCS) WAS THE FIRST STATE-SUPPORTED ORCHESTRA IN THE COUNTRY. ITS DUAL MISSION OF STATEWIDE SERVICE & MUSIC EDUCATION CONTINUES TODAY. IT IS THE LARGEST PERFORMING ARTS ORGANIZATION IN NORTH CAROLINA & HAS THE MOST EXTENSIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM OF ANY U.S. ORCHESTRA. ANNUALLY, IT PERFORMS 175 FULL ORCHESTRA CONCERTS, TRAVELS MORE THAN 18,500 MILES, REACHES 98 COUNTIES & PERFORMS FOR 250,000 PEOPLE INCLUDING MORE THAN 55,000 STUDENTS. IN MARCH 2020 & DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, NCS PIVOTED ITS PROGRAMS ONLINE RESULTING IN EXPANDED DELIVERY OF ITS MISSION BEYOND NORTH CAROLINA AND TO NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL MARKETS. THE ORCHESTRA RETURNED TO IN-PERSON PROGRAMS IN MAY 2021.GOVERNMENT CAPACITY RESTRICTIONS PREVENTED NCS FROM ACHIEVING $5.2M IN REVENUE IN FY2020. EXPENSES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY CURTAILED INCLUDING VOLUNTARY SALARY REDUCTIONS. EDUCATION SERVICE TO THE STUDENTS OF NORTH CAROLINA CONTINUED VIRTUALLY WITH A SIGNIFICANT FOCUS ON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. IN FISCAL 2021, THE SYMPHONY CREATED A RECOVERY RESERVE FUND TO OFFSET PROJECTED DECLINES IN FUNDING IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS AS COMPARED TO PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS OF EARNED AND CONTRIBUTED INCOME. IT IS UNKNOWN HOW LONG THE ADVERSE CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CORONAVIRUS WILL LAST AND WHAT THE COMPLETE FINANCIAL EFFECT WILL BE TO THE SYMPHONY. OPERATING REVENUE INCREASED IN FY2022 BUT IS STILL BELOW PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS.
