SCIENTIFIC CARBON MEASUREMENTS-- PROVIDING ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP TO THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES MARKET CONSORTIUM LLC, WITH THE GOAL TO LAUNCH A FULLY FUNCTIONING NATIONAL SCALE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES MARKET CONCEIVED AND DESIGNED TO SELL BOTH CARBON AND WATER QUALITY AND QUANTITY CREDITS FOR THE AGRICULTURE SECTOR IN 2022. - ASSESSING THE IMPACTS OF SOIL HEALTH PRACTICE IMPLEMENTATION ON CARBON SEQUESTRATION AND DROUGHT RESILIENCE IN SOILS ACROSS NORTH AMERICA.-LAUNCHED PROJECTS FOR ESTABLISHING THE MEASUREMENT, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF SOIL FOR THE QUANTIFICATION OF SOIL CARBON AS WELL AS THE CAPACITY OF SOIL TO SEQUESTER AND RETAIN CARBON.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT- DEVELOPED NEW EQUATIONS FOR PREDICTING HOW CHANGES IN SOIL ORGANIC CARBON IMPACT AVAILABLE WATER HOLDING CAPACITY AND THEREFORE DROUGHT RESILIENCE. THIS RESEARCH DEMONSTRATED THAT APPROXIMATELY TWICE AS MUCH WATER CAN BE STORED IN SOILS BY INCREASING CARBON THAN HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY DETERMINED AND WIDELY ASSUMED. THESE RESULTS WILL INCREASE FARMERS' MOTIVATION TO ADOPT REGENERATIVE SOIL HEALTH SYSTEMS TO BUILD DROUGHT RESILIENCE IN THEIR SOILS. ASSESSED IMPACTS OF TILLAGE ON THE SOIL MICROBIOME ACROSS NORTH AMERICA. CONDUCTED A NATIONAL SURVEY OF 10,000 FARMERS TO ASSESS THEIR INTEREST IN THE IMPACTS OF AGRICULTURAL INPUTS ON SOIL HEALTH. 66% OF RESPONDENTS ARE INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC, THEREBY IDENTIFYING AN IMPORTANT NEED FOR FURTHER ADVANCING REGENERATIVE SOIL HEALTH SYSTEMS. PROVIDED MULTI-DISCIPLINARY SCIENTIFIC LEADERSHIP ENGAGING PHYSICIANS, DIETITIANS, AGRONOMISTS, SOIL SCIENTISTS, AND OTHER PROFESSIONS TO EXPLORE SOIL HEALTH HUMAN HEALTH CONNECTIONS, RESULTING IN IDENTIFICATION OF 10 PRIORITIES FOR ADVANCING THAT UNDERSTANDING. INITIATED AND CO-LED EVALUATION OF THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE SOIL HEALTH HUMAN HEALTH CONNECTION THROUGH THE FOOD NUTRITION PATHWAY. UPON FINDING LITTLE CREDIBLE RESEARCH, RECOMMENDED FUTURE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGNS FOR INVESTIGATING THOSE RELATIONSHIPS. - PROVIDING ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP TO THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES MARKET CONSORTIUM LLC, WITH THE GOAL TO LAUNCH A FULLY FUNCTIONING NATIONAL SCALE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES MARKET CONCEIVED AND DESIGNED TO SELL BOTH CARBON AND WATER QUALITY AND QUANTITY CREDITS FOR THE AGRICULTURE SECTOR IN 2022. - ASSESSING THE IMPACTS OF SOIL HEALTH PRACTICE IMPLEMENTATION ON CARBON SEQUESTRATION AND DROUGHT RESILIENCE IN SOILS ACROSS NORTH AMERICA.-DEVELOPED PROPOSALS FOR ESTABLISHING THE MEASUREMENT, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF SOIL FOR THE QUANTIFICATION OF SOIL CARBON AS WELL AS THE CAPACITY OF SOIL TO SEQUESTER AND RETAIN CARBON.

SOIL HEALTH MEASUREMENTS AND STANDARDS-SEVERAL DIFFERENT MEASURES OF SOIL HEALTH ARE CURRENTLY USED, SHI CONDUCTED A 3-YEAR ASSESSMENT OF 31 SOIL HEALTH MEASUREMENTS AT 124 AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH SITES ACROSS THE U.S., CANADA, AND MEXICO TO ANSWER THE QUESTION "HOW SHOULD SOIL HEALTH BE MEASURED?" THIS IS THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE, STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT OF SOIL HEALTH MEASUREMENTS KNOWN TO EXIST. IN THE SUMMER OF 2022 SHI WILL ANNOUNCE ITS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EFFECTIVE SOIL HEALTH MEASUREMENTS FOR FARMERS, LANDOWNERS, SCIENTISTS, FIELD CONSERVATIONISTS, AND OTHERS TO EVALUATE THE HEALTH OF THEIR SOILS AND TO SET TARGETS TO MEASURE PROGRESS. IN 2020 SHI LAUNCHED EFFORTS TO DEVELOP A PROOF OF CONCEPT FOR IDENTIFYING, MEASURING, AND COMMUNICATING SOIL HEALTH TARGETS FOR U.S. SOILS. THIS TARGET WORK CONTINUED IN 2021.
