DURING 2023, NCCS SERVED A TOTAL OF 156 CLIENTS TO DATE. OF THIS TOTAL, 62 WERE STUDENTS IN THE SOMERVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS AS PART OF NCCS'S EMBEDDED SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM. THE LEAD CLINICIAN IN OUR SCHOOLS PROGRAM IS ARMINDO OLIVEIRA, WHO IS FROM CAPE VERDE, SPEAKS SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE, AND HAS 27 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE MENTAL HEALTH FIELD. FORTY-ONE OF THE STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM ARE PRIMARILY SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE SPEAKING AND ARE NEW IMMIGRANTS FROM BRAZIL AND CENTRAL AMERICA. THESE STUDENTS ARE UNINSURED, OR UNDER-INSURED DUE TO IMMIGRATION STATUS. WE ALSO SERVED APPROXIMATELY 21 STUDENTS IN MINDFULNESS GROUPS AT NEXT WAVE/ FULL CIRCLE ALTERNATIVE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL. IN 2023, NINETY-FOUR CLIENTS WERE SERVED IN INDIVIDUAL, COUPLES OR FAMILY COUNSELING THROUGH OUR COMMUNITY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PRACTICE. APPROXIMATELY 50% OF THE CLIENTS HAD MASSHEALTH OR MEDICARE INSURANCE, OR RECEIVED SERVICES FREE OF CHARGE THROUGH SERVICES PROVIDED BY INTERNS. IN 2023, NCCS CONTINUED ITS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM AND PROVIDED CLINICAL INTERNSHIPS FOR TWO MASTERS LEVEL COUNSELING STUDENTS FROM CAMBRIDGE COLLEGE AND INTERNSHIPS FOR TWO STUDENTS IN GRANT WRITING; ONE FROM LASALLE COLLEGE, AND THE OTHER AN APPLICANT TO THE UMASS BOSTON MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING PROGRAM.
